Tour of Historic Moore's Bridge Site

Saturday,Oct 2, 2010

Meet at the Site at 10:00 am

The Carroll county Historical Society is hoping for a beautiful fall Saturday for this fieldtrip to explore the Historic Moore's Bridge Park near Whitesburg. This 485 acre park is the most historic site in the county. This site is most significant for its Creek Indian History, early Carroll settlements, Carroll County's only Civil War Skirmish and cover bridge history.

James D. Moore's pre-civil war house still stands and is a focal point for the park. Moore partnered with Charles Mabry and the well-known African-American bridge builder Horace King to construct a covered bridge which once spanned the Chattahoochee River here. During the Civil War, Union troops burned this first bridge and after the war a second bridge was costructed. It stood until 1917 when the present iron bridge was built. The Moore house dates to around 1857, possibly built by Horace King.
The society has copies of two books which give more information on Moore's bridge : Bridging Deep South Rivers, $28.00, a study of Horace King and his bridges and Sherman's Horsemen, $22.00, which contains among others an account of the battle ae Moore's Bridge. These books will be available the day of the field trip.
DIRECTIONS: Travel from Carrollton to Whitesburg on Hwy 16, go straight through the roundabout towards Newnan. Pass Marchman Road on the left, then turn left on Old Newnan Road - it angles off tot he left. There is plenty of parking at the site. Prepare to do a short walk down to the site of the bridge and house.    For more information call: 770-834-3081
