SAVING THE DEPOT

The Historic Carrollton Depot  was once a vital link to the community especially during the peak of the county’s cotton era.  The freight section served the community well as a point for shipping cotton by train. Sometime around 1900 a sixteen car train of cotton was shipped out of the Carrollton Depot. A 15-year effort to acquire the depot by the city from Norfork-Southern Railway was finally reached in January of 2006.  A depot committee was set up to oversee the extensive restoration and work that will be required to restore this historic structure back to its grand ole days of the cotton era. The restoration/adaptive use of this building will be important as the city’s downtown area becomes designated as a historic town on the National Register of Historic Places.   Renovation is critical before further deterioration occurs to the passenger section and its exterior brick work on the freight section.  The restoration/adaptive used will be phased in as follows, scheduled as grants are received and funds become available.

·        Stabilization: Structure/roof repairs; exterior brick work repaired; electrical/ mechanical upgrading; central heating and air

  • Adaptive Use:  converting freight depot and passenger station for public and community use

            - Freight Depot: reconstructed former loading dock; smaller doors and windows added to large sliding doorway area

            - Passenger Station: redesigned for visitor center, gift shop and small railroad museum located in old waiting room area

  • Improved site amenities: such as parking, pedestrian access from Bradley Street/ downtown area, landscaping

The Carrollton Depot Committee – currently is comprised of local citizens appointed by the Mayor of City of Carrollton, the Carroll County Historical Society and others who have a great interest in railroadingl.

The Carroll County Historical Society will spearhead the "Citizens Campaign" to help raise additional funds to complete the restoration project. All funds will be used solely for the restoration/adaptive use of the Carrollton Depot.
