The Carroll County Historical Society has
bestowed the honor of "Historian" on several individuals in
Carroll County who have worked diligently to preserve the history of
Carroll County and its people. They have gone above the call of
duty to help preserve Carroll County's past for future generation of
people to enjoy and learn.

Doug Mabry was been given the title of
unofficial Carroll County Historian. As a independent researcher Doug
has done much to help Carroll County recapture much its lost history.
Near the completion of a double major in history and archeology.
Through his research, Doug is an expert at uncovering facts and
bringing to light many lost stories from the counties' past. Subjects he has
researched include Chief William McIntosh, the Creek Indians, the
Kingsbury Family, the McDaniel Family, Banning Mills, Old
Carrollton, Villa Rica's forgotten gold rush, the history of the Whooping
Creek area, Horace King and Moore's Bridge. Doug likes to search for
undiscovered records in Courthouses and archives, as opposed to what
has already been written in books. It 's more about the people, places
and events t han
the genealogy that excites Doug in uncovering the past. Doug Mabry
received the CCHS award for Outstanding Service in Historical
Preservation in 2002. |

Myron House is from New Albany, Indiana on
the Ohio River across from Louisville. He came to Georgia when his
father was sent to Fort Gilliam in Jonesboro. He was in the first
graduating class at Clayton Junior College and came to West Georgia
College in 1980 to become the first director of the West Georgia
College Special Collections. At first there were only a few papers had
been collected on the school's first president, Dr. Irving S. Ingram.
now
the college houses an impressive collection of papers, photographs,
and antique literary books. Myron helped archive
political papers collected through Georgia's Political Heritage
Project . Myron is also an active member of the Carroll County
Historical Society and Georgia Society of Archivists. Myron received
the CCHS award for Outstanding Service in Preservation in 2005.

Dr. Mel Steeley is a retired Chairman of
the History Department at the State University of West Georgia. He began collecting political documents in 1985 when he saw some of
Buck Swindell's staff destroying his files when he left office. After
retirement from the schools history department, he was made director of
the Georgia Political Heritage Program. This has lead to the Ingram
Library at UWG becoming the depository for a large collection of papers,
videos and tapes on political figures of regional interest, as well as
eight Georgia governors, and a number of state and national politicians.
There are now boxes and boxes of papers, docu ments and videos in his collection that are in need of an archival facility of
their own somewhere on the UWG campus. Mel also has an interest
in general history especially the southern kind and enjoys inspiring
younger students into understanding and getting excited about history. Dr Mel Steeley received the CCHS award
for Outstanding Service in Preservation in 2006. |

Mary Florence Word is married to local
Carrollton attorney Reuben M. Word. Mary Florence is a certified
professional genealogist, and has been a dedicated member of the Carroll
County Genealogical Society. She has served as president and
book committee chairman of that society. She has spent numerous hours
researching, collecting, and transcribing genealogical records on
Carroll County and through her efforts; the society has published
early deed books and census records of Carroll county. She has also
helped to have several old books on the county republished, and served
as chairman for several major book projects The Heritage of Carroll
County and Carroll County, Georgia Cemeteries . Mary Florence
received a CCHS award for Outstanding Service in Historical
Preservation in 2003. |

Sam Pyle is an avid War Between the States
enthusiast and genealogist who has done research on Carroll County's
role during the American Civil War. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and
helped re-charter the old McDaniel-Curtis Camp of the Sons of
Confederate Veterans in Carroll County. Sam has been instrumental in helping to
preserve the County's Civil War history and locating the graves of
over 800 veterans from that war who once lived in the county. He has
also served as chairman of the County's Cemetery Oversight Committee
that worked to locate all of the county's lost or forgotten graves and
cemeteries. The work of this committee lead to the publication of a two book set of all of Carroll Counties' cemeteries.
Sam is also a Civil War re-enactor and enjoys doing living history
talks and demonstrations for young people. Sam received the CCHS award
for Outstanding Service in Historical Preservation in 2006.

Hugh W. Barrow is a U. S. Navy Veteran of
World War II and an avid Civil War Historian. Hugh was born and raised
in Bowdon Georgia. He has written and published a book on the history
of Co. B of Cobb's Legion "Bowdon Volunteers". This book has been
widely accepted by historians as the definitive history of Col. T. R.
R. Cobb's Georgia Legion. In his research he traveled to every site
and battlefield where this unit fought. Hugh has also written papers
about the first president of old Bowdon College, Col. Charles A.
McDaniel and his wife Victoria Hines. He has written a brief
overview of all the units from Carroll County that served in the War
Between the States. He has been a long time member of the Sons of
Confederate Veterans. Hugh received the CCHS award for
Outstanding Service in Historical Preservation in 2006.

Villa Rica Gold Museum |
|
Carl Lewis has for many years been the
unofficial caretaker of old Villa Rica Gold Mine Property, and has
just recently become the official historical interpreter for the new
Pine Mountain Gold Museum and Park. Carl has worked for years to
preserve the legacy of Villa Rica's original gold miners - collecting
old photographs, documents, mining equipment and even rock and mineral
samples. All of which will become part of the Villa Rica's new
gold museum under construction at the old Stockmar Gold Mines.
Carl received the CCHS award for Outstanding Service in Historical
Preservation in 2002. |
